The Mexico City Wellness Guide

The Mexico WELLNESS GUIDE includes the best pilates and workout classes, my favourite cafes, including gluten-free , dairy-free, refined-sugar free options in Mexico and other amazing restaurants and my favourite shops for home decor and fashion shopping in CDMX. (Scroll down for lists and links in the titles!)

In 2023, I had the chance to visit Mexico City (or CDMX for short) twice within the year and rediscover its changed landscape since my last trip to the capital almost a decade ago. On the work front, I was lucky to be part of launching the LatAm sector with my team. In March, I traveled to the city, meeting with impactful fintech companies that are having positive economic and social impacts throughout the country.

My more recent visit to CDMX in January 2024 and November 2024, only deepened my admiration for the city, seeing how much it has evolved, especially after the pandemic. During a quick R&R trip in January, I introduced my husband to the rich culture, delicious food, and the breathtaking cityscape. While in November 2024, I did a solo trip and stopped by all my favourite places.

This guide is all about celebrating the things that made these trips special to me. Wellness, for me, goes beyond just spa experiences; it's about immersing yourself in the local culture. My holistic lifestyle involves enjoying local food, staying active with sports, and taking breaks for wellness. I'm also captivated by local art, artisans, and museums, and of course fashion and shopping. Decorating our new apartment since October 2023, allowed us to source beautiful items that showcase the incredible textiles and craftsmanship found in this country and the various regions.

Below, you'll find a short but essential list for all the travel and wellness enthusiasts out there, capturing the essence of my experiences.

Wellness Spots

  1. The Mat MX – Infrared Mat Yoga and Pilates: For the biohackers and pilates girls, go try this amazing infrared studio in the heart of tranquility, The Mat MX offers a unique wellness experience through Infrared (a type of light on the far and rear infrared spectrum) Mat Yoga and Pilates which is especially great after a long flight when you need a good swear and stretch. The warmth from the infrared sauna technology enhances your practice, promoting relaxation, rejuvenation and detoxification. Surrounded by a super calming vibe, this spot is a haven for those seeking a holistic approach to fitness and well-being while on vacation.

  2. Youth for Us – HydraFacial: I experienced the secret to radiant skin at Youth for Us, where the transformative HydraFacial takes center stage. This spa is a minimalist and aesthetic sanctuary for those looking to revitalize their skin, leaving it youthful and glowing especially with that smoggy city air (sorry to CDMX but its true). This facial was perfect for cleaning out any clogged pores with their advanced skincare treatment, a perfect blend of a functional glow up and a self-care moment.

  3. Raquel Sarfati Spa – Essential Facial: At Raquel Sarfati Spa, I indulged in the epitome of aesthetic luxury with their Essential Facial. This spa retreat in Polanco offers a personalized and innovative facial experience that aims to renew and nourish your skin. The light hand of their aesthetician with the use of varying tools like Cryo spoons, red light therapy, masks, and peelings really revived my skin after weeks with dry, winter skin and helped me leave with a radiant and refreshed complexion.

  4. Pilates Reformer Juarez: This classic Pilates at Pilates Reformer Juarez, is a nice local spot where it feels like you are at home doing pialtes at your cozy neightbourhood studio. With traditional reformer equipment, this studio provides a dynamic and effective workout. I was so into it I booked a five pack and went every day for a week. Instructors are super dynamic and varied in their styles in a very cozy studio space. Its definitely a supportive environment that caters to all fitness levels, making it an ideal spot for enthusiasts and beginners alike.

  5. Hotel Intercontinental Hela Spa – Get the Body Wrap: I love to try local spas and detox from a busy day. When I was in Mexico City in March 2024 for work I was recommended to try the Hela Spa. The spa is located in Roma Norte and Polanco where they give you multiple options of relaxation for your wellness moment including the use of their sauna and plunge pools. I took the Body Wrap treatment which really was exfoliating and helped drained my lymph after travel which helped me feel lighter and rejuvenated. This little oasis had many skilled therapists offering massages, facials and all the goodies. It felt like one of those must do’s: get in, detoxify and nourish and leave with a glow.

  6. Clinica de Acupunctura - Megan MacLagganClinica de Acupuntura is located in a quit street, a discreet building in Condesa. Megan was basically a saviour to me when I caught a serious stomach bug on the plane as I needed a quick immunity boost. Her clinic offers a personalized and therapeutic approach to health through the ancient art of TCM acupuncture. Megan, a seasoned practitioner from California, moved to CDMX over 5 years ago, her practise combines expertise with a compassionate touch. The clinic's ambiance exudes serenity, creating an environment conducive to relaxation and healing.

Outdoors

  1. Sunrise at the Chinampa – Arca Tierra: Slightly out of the city you can experience the serenity of nature at the Chinampa by Arca Tierra. This is a super special experience as it is a regenerative farming site situated on the Lake of Xochimilco. This is for those of you who want to do something different as this experience offers a unique blend of outdoor activities, mindfulness, and connection with the surroundings as the organizers take you on a boat tour on the lake during sunrise. They also create a beautiful breakfast outside to enjoy the start of the day in a beautiful farm-to-table meal. I highly advise to start your day with the refreshing sunrise experience, they also offer just brunch for those not interested in the lake tour or alternatively a cooking experience and a tour of the farm. The group teaches the principles of the regenerative farm that has been around for hundreds of years. This connection with the land and the culture really sets the tone for a day filled with well-being. This needs to be booked far in advance though (2 weeks minimum) and the larger the group the better value for money. Four Seasons CDMX experiences offers to plan this for you (highly reccomend for a luxury experience) but you can also contact the Arca Tierra directly if you want to organize it yourself with a group.

  2. Teotihucan Pyramids: Want to know more about Mexican culture? Sign yourself and your friends and family up for a journey through time and history at the inspiring Teotihuacan Pyramids. Located just outside Mexico City (around 40 minutes), this archaeological wonder is amazing for outdoors enthusiasts, explorers and history enthusiasts alike. As you ascend the ancient steps, you'll be captivated by the Pyramid of the Sun and the mystique surrounding the Pyramid of the Moon. Feel the energy of this sacred site as you wander around enjoying the architectural marvels that once stood as a testament to a flourishing civilization. Teotihuacan is not just a collection of pyramids; it's an immersive experience that transports you to a different era, inviting reflection on how rich the Mexican culture truly is. Book a drive over through a taxi or a guide using airbnb or your local hotel’s concierge services.

  3. Soho House - Pool and Terrace: If you are a member or know a member of Soho House go check this new House out. This place truly feels like an oasis, nestled within the the lively Juarez area of the city. The space is huge and super inviting offering you an escape to the hustle and bustle while enjoying the chic sophistication synonymous with the Soho House brand. The poolside ambiance exudes a sense of effortless style, with plush loungers and elegant cabanas offering the perfect retreat for relaxation in their beautiful green beach chairs. Immerse yourself in the cool waters of the pool, sip on artisanal cocktails, and bask on the stunning view of the old colonial building that the house is built in. The Terrace, an extension of refined aesthetics, provides an al fresco haven for socializing or simply enjoying a moment of tranquility in the heart of the urban landscape. In addition, this location houses an amazing selection of Mexican art in each room which is an absolute must-see.

  4. Chapultepec Park: One of CDMX’s most famous parks, its the Central Park of the city, and a must see. The  natural beauty escape is filled with cultural richness in the heart of the city. As one of the largest city parks in the world, Chapultepec offers a diverse range of experiences. You can wander through lush botanical gardens, discover historical monuments, or even take boat ride on the serene lakes (yes- multiple!). The park is a treasure trove of museums, including the iconic National Museum of Anthropology that we visited with my husband and loved. I could have gotten lost in their for hours. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a cultural excursion, or a family-friendly outing, Chapultepec Park seamlessly combines nature and history, creating a multifaceted destination that captivates visitors from all walks of life.

Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Food Options:

  1. La Otilia: La Otilia stands as a culinary haven for those seeking delectable gluten-free (GF) and dairy-free (DF), refined- sugar free (RSF) options. The menu has the WIDEST range of flavorful dishes, salads, pizzas, sandwiches, pastries, and other local dishes that I have EVER seen in GF, DF, RSF options, that easily custom for dietary restrictions and do not compromise on taste and satisfaction which was so amazing to me. They also are refined sugar free in all their pastries which I love. Their Polanco location is my favourite, with a huge garden terrace while the Roma Norte location is great for a quick pit-stop on your walking adventures through the city.

  2. Forever: Forever is a unique vegan cuisine perspective in a chic and inviting setting. Love their commitment to quality ingredients and innovative recipes, this restaurant caters to those with dietary preferences without compromising on culinary excellence. Again, its so fascinating how many new vegan, DF, GF, concepts have come out recently that do not compromise on flavour for those of us with allergies or preferences.

  3. Ojo de Agua: At Ojo de Agua, the experience is elevated with a menu that celebrates gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives. They also have amazing smoothies and juices and are amazing for a quick lunch in the middle of the day when you are touring the city. This place saved me when I just wanted some fruit and to get a quick boost of vitamins in a feast of vibrant flavors.

  4. Basico: Basico redefines dining with a focus on healthy salad and bowl options. The minimalist yet inviting atmosphere complements a menu that emphasizes fresh, wholesome ingredients, providing an easy, stress-free journey for those looking for a healthy pit-stop during their trip. I had this for lunch every day during my busy work days, but also during my more relaxed weekend days, it was just such an easy and simple staple.

Best Cafes:

  1. Café Nin: The bustling Juarez location Step into the cozy ambiance of Café Nin, where aromatic coffee and a curated menu await. This café is a haven for coffee enthusiasts and foodies alike, offering a perfect blend of rich brews and delectable treats in a welcoming setting. They have the absolute best cinnamon rolls (ask my husband - he had two a day basically!)

  2. Café Quentin: With a few locations around CDMX, Café Quentin was the perfect place to savor the art of coffee in a chic and contemporary atmosphere. With an amazingly quality and a diverse menu, this café is a destination for those seeking a moment of tranquility paired with exceptional coffee. Buy some coffee to go, as I always do to try at home long after your holiday is over.

  3. Tierra Garat: Tierra Garat takes coffee culture to new heights, combining tradition and innovation. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air as people mill about working online in the chic cafe indulging in a variety of blends and artisanal pastries, making it a must-visit for coffee connoisseurs.

  4. Brew Brew: Located in the stylish Roma Norte district Brew Brew is a haven for coffee lovers seeking a laid-back atmosphere and an extensive selection of coffee varieties. With a passion for the perfect brew, this café promises a cozy retreat for those looking to unwind and enjoy the art of coffee.

Best Restaurants:

  1. Taverna Juarez: Taverna Juarez captured the true laid back yet posh nature of CDMX, that simultaneously brought both regional and mediteranean flavors in an aesthetically cool space. With a menu inspired by local ingredients, this restaurant offers a sophisticated dining experience, blending tradition with modern gastro type food in what I like to call a mysical environment. I cannot say more, its just a spot you need to discover to understand. BUT when you do go, make sure to get the cauliflower and the bacon wrapped dates (my favourite)!

  2. Amaya: I spent a lot of time in Juarez as you can tell so I found all of the hidden gems, including Amaya, where a fusion of Mexican flavors and a down-to-earth vibe define the dining experience. This restaurant is a celebration of creativity and taste, making it a top choice for those seeking a special local meal.

  3. Blanco Colima: Everyone goes to Mexico City and talks about the “classics” like Pujol and Quintonil, but I love beautiful spots like Blanco Colima who match food and aesthetic experience so perfectly. Blanco Colima, to me, is a dining focus of a kind of modern-slash- contemporary Mexican cuisine. It has all the classics but with a warm twist. The beautiful colonial building is super elegant and it makes for an experience that showcases the diversity and richness of local flavors, that will definitely make a memorable night.  You won’t miss it when you are walking around Roma Norte!

  4. Delirio: Delirio is a little cafe and deli that is perfect for a little apero or snack throughout the day. It is such a cute find, because you can explore a little menu that blends Mexican authenticity with a bit of innovation. Love that they are using fresh, seasonal ingredients, and creating a mini-dining experience that is both exciting and comforting even if its just for a quick snack break.

  5. Campobajo: Campobajo redefines the art of grilling with a menu that showcases the finest cuts of meat, fish and locally sourced ingredients. We went here with my colleagues and its such a cool vibe. The restaurant's rustic charm and bold flavors make it a go-to destination for those seeking a laid-back culinary experience. Get the Al Pastor Shrimp Tostada, truly a must!

Blanco Colima - Roma Norte. Elegant and Classy.

Taverna - Juarez - Vibey and Mystical!

Campobajo - Roma Norte. Rustic and Cool.

My Favourite Home Decor and Aesthetic Shops:

  1. Espacio 3 2 1: Located in Juarez, this little boutique shop has cute clothes, home decor and lots of up and coming Mexican designers from different regions of the country. They also sell some art prints, carpets and an amazing local perfume which I love called Perfumarica!

  2. Rufina: This beautiful boutique shop has stunning linen items but also amazing home decor from the Oaxaca region such as ceramic bowls, cups and cute design candles. I feel every little shop is the most aesthetically pleasing in Mexico and I want to buy all the home decor, too bad the ceramic items were all too heavy otherwise I would have bought a full set of plates and cups. Next time!

  3. Irrelevante CDMX: Located in Roma Norte, this is arguably not a store but an art gallery and beautiful objects boutique but we bought two stunning photographs here from a Mexican artist that I fell in love with, off the wall. They also have little design items such as candles and coffee table books which I love.

  4. LAGO: I stumbled upon this two-floor shop in Polanco on the neighbourhood’s main strip and its absolutely stunning. They have a wide selection of handmade home decor pillows(which we bought) with beautiful stitching from regions such as Chiapas. As well as handmade beautiful jewelry and resortwear clothes from local designers. They also have beautiful prints to colour the walls of your house. Every time I find a store I love its so hard for me to walk away from beautiful decor things…

My Favourite Local Designers

  1. Sandra Weil: I am a huge fashion junkie which is my vice but my favourite thing about travelling to different countries is discovering local designers because it shares so much about the local culture and style. This elegant and beautiful women’s brand is on the pricier side - I would even consider it like a Mexican MaxMara -  but truly worth stopping by if you are in CDMX. The store I went to is a beautiful one in Polanco and thanks to my last job as an Impact Investor at Symbiotics (an investor, investing in emerging markets small businesses) I actually got to meet the designers. I love seeing how truly creative fashion can be, Sandra Weil is a brand that redefines that to me and is simultaenously such an amazing representative of the chic Mexican culture I love.

  2. Soskena: I stumbled upon this ethical and sustainable basics brand in March-2023 at a concept store in Juarez and the cotton of the underwear just felt so soft I had to get it. The brand’s ethos is climate conscious, locally produced basics embodying slow fashion which I stand by so strongly. I also met the founder on my recent trip to Mexico City and he shared with me the story of how Soskena started, inspired by his time in Sweden and his brother who used to work in the textile industry. The brand really represents the new age of sustainability and comfort in one.

  3. Cynthia Buttenklepper: I love an elevated basic, like a beautiful button down shirt with material that is soft to the skin in a neutral color. Or a chicer boho style silk top that can be worn with anything, which is the epitome of Cynthia Buttenklepper’s design style. In classic me fashion (pun intended), I also immediately got it dirty and their customer service on Instagram was so good they explained to me how to fix it and ensured they would help if worst came to worst (nightmare resolved!). Love a brand with amazing customer service!

  4. Descansa MX: I had previously found this brand in a small boutique in Condesa but I couldn’t find the same shop the most recent time I stopped by CDMX. The brand is typical of Mexican designers, a small artisan creating linen and dyed linen pieces which absolutely suit any temperature, place or season. I wear the linen shorts I got from them all summer, non-stop.

  5. Cuca: This is more of a resort wear brand but I love their style, they have cute two-piece linen outfits in all the colours of the rainbow. I have a beautiful sky blue baby doll dress from them and its a go-to on holidays.

Irrelevante CDMX

These lists are absolutely not even close to the diversity of choice that exists in Mexico City- they are a few of my favourite spots that I love going back to! Whatever you do and whenever you decide to go to Mexico City indulge in the city’s museums, random street art galleries, outstanding cafes and delicious cuisine. Enjoy different neighbourhoods such as up and coming Juarez, classics like Roma Norte, Centro, and Condesa, and elegant and posh Polanco which are my favourites to walk around in! Oh and don’t forget to bring home some cacao - a superfood found plentifully all over!
